Kenny “The Jet” Smith, one of the staples of the NBA on TNT broadcast, chose to walk off the set Wednesday night in an act of solidarity with the players protesting the police shooting of Jacob Blake.
Earlier Wednesday, the Milwaukee Bucks, who were scheduled to play Game 5 of their series against the Orlando Magic, opted to boycott the game in an effort to continue to put a spotlight on the fight against anti-Black racism and police brutality.
The act set off a domino effect, with other teams quickly following suit.
“… and for me, I think for me, I think the biggest thing now, as a black man and a former player,” Smith said just before unplugging his microphone and leaving the set, “I think it’s best for me to support the players and just not be here tonight.”
According to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania, players will have a meeting Wednesday night to determine next steps.
